  65. DEFINITION OF SHAREWARE

  67. Shareware distribution gives users a chance
  68. to try software before buying it. If you try
  69. a Shareware program and continue using it,
  70. you are expected to register. Individual
  71. programs differ on details -- some request
  72. registration while others require it, some
  73. specify a maximum trial period. With regist-
  74. ration, you get anything from the simple
  75. right to continue using the software to an
  76. updated program with printed manual.

  78. Copyright laws apply to both Shareware and
  79. commercial software, and the copyright
  80. holder retains all rights, with a few
  81. specific exceptions as stated below. Share-
  82. ware authors are accomplished programmers,
  83. just like commercial authors, and the
  84. programs are of comparable quality. (In both
  85. cases, there are good programs and bad ones!)
  86. The main difference is in the method of
  87. distribution. The author specifically grants
  88. the right to copy and distribute the soft-
  89. ware, either to all and sundry or to a
  90. specific group. For example, some authors
  91. require written permission before a com-
  92. mercial disk vendor may copy their Shareware.

  95. type of software. You should find software
  96. that suits your needs and pocketbook, whether
  97. it's commercial or Shareware. The Shareware
  98. system makes fitting your needs easier,
  99. because you can try before you buy. And
  100. because the overhead is low, prices are low
  101. also. Shareware has the ultimate money-back
  102. guarantee -- if you don't use the product,
  103. you don't pay for it.

  113. laimer of warranty: "WAV Wars is supplied
  114. as is. The author disclaims all warranties,
  115. expressed or implied, including, without
  116. limitation, the warranties of merchantab-
  117. ility and of fitness for any purpose. The
  118. author assumes no liability for damages,
  119. direct or consequential, which may result
  120. from the use of WAV Wars."

  122. WAV Wars is a "shareware program" and is
  123. provided at no charge to the user for eval-
  124. uation.  Feel free to share it with your
  125. friends, but please do not give it away
  126. altered or as part of another system. The
  127. essence of "user-supported" software is to
  128. provide personal computer users with quality
  129. software without high prices, and yet to
  130. provide incentive for programmers to continue
  131. to develop new products.  If you find this
  132. program useful and find that you are using
  133. WAV Wars and continue to use WAV Wars after
  134. 15 days, you must make a registration payment
  135. of $10.00 US (Plus shipping & handling if you
  136. are outside of the US, Canada or Mexico. See
  137. REGISTER.TXT for shipping charges.) to Blake
  138. Anderson at the address below. The $10.00 (US)
  139. registration fee will license one copy for use
  140. on any one computer at any one time.  You must
  141. treat this software just like a book. An
  142. example is that this software may be used by
  143. any number of people and may be freely moved
  144. from one computer location to another, so long
  145. as there is no possibility of it being used at
  146. one location while it's being used at another.
  147. Just as a book cannot be read by two different
  148. persons at the same time.  See REGISTER.TXT

  151. Commercial users of WAV Wars must register
  152. and pay for their copies of WAV Wars within
  153. 15 days of first use or their license is
  154. withdrawn.  Site-License arrangements may be
  155. made by contacting Blake Anderson.

  158. remuneration must first contact Blake
  159. Anderson at the address below for authoriza-
  160. tion. This authorization will be auto-
  161. matically granted to distributors recognized
  162. by the (ASP) as adhering to its guidelines
  163. for shareware distributors, and such distrib-
  164. utors may begin offering WAV Wars immediately
  165. (However Blake Anderson must still be advised
  166. so that the distributor can be kept up-to-
  167. date with the latest version of WAV Wars.).

  170. along to your friends for evaluation. Please
  171. encourage them to register their copy if they
  172. find that they can use it. All registered

  183. of free, guaranteed support via email or 
  184. snail mail (see the addresses below). However,
  185. comments and questions are always welcome. If
  186. for some reason the product goes out of date
  187. and is no longer supported, you will be given
  188. the option for a full refund as long as you
  189. are newly registering the program. (Obviously,
  190. if you register the program and maybe two
  191. years later it is no longer supported, you
  192. won't have the option for a refund.)

  259. History - Why WAV Wars?
  260. ==============================
  261. WAV Wars was created because of the sound
  262. file wars that occur at my office. Several
  263. people there have a collection of WAV files
  264. at the ready to do combat back and forth. The
  265. problem with using shortcuts to the sounds or
  266. other inconvient ways to play them is that it
  267. takes time to find the sound and then time
  268. for Windows 95 to fire up the sound player
  269. and play the sound...this caused delays in
  270. responses and was simply an inconvenience. I
  271. figured that other offices, etc., might
  272. participate in similar antics and decided to
  273. write an application to simplify and speed up
  274. the process. And since I couldn't find an
  275. existing application to my liking, WAV Wars
  276. was born.

  278. WAV Wars has already moved forward to version
  279. 2.1 all in a couple of weeks because of
  280. modification requests and ideas from around
  281. the office. Who knows where it will be in a
  282. few months...

  284. I feel that WAV Wars is probably going to
  285. stay the same for a while now and can safely
  286. be distributed without fear of you, the user,
  287. missing the newest version.

  291. If there is a demand for an improved WAV Wars,
  292. I will heavily consider writing it. A couple
  293. ideas include: support for multiple configur-
  294. ation files to save several sets of sounds,
  295. capabilities to group sounds into categories
  296. or families to allow for more selections,
  297. blah, blah, blah...
  298.  
  299. If you have an idea that you submit, and it
  300. gets written and implemented (and you're the
  301. first one or two or (?) to suggest it), I'll
  302. email you an upgrade upon completion for
  303. free. Fair enough?

  312. WAV Wars was pretty heavily tested at the
  313. office and no problems were found. However,
  314. should you find a bug, please note what you
  315. were doing, the error if one was reported,
  316. and email me at the address below. I would
  317. appreciate any and all bug reports. I would
  318. like to make WAV Wars as error free as
  319. possible.

  321. One note (not a bug, but...): There in not a
  322. stop button because WAV Wars was meant to
  323. play little files. If it's really wanted,
  324. maybe I'll add it in a future version.
